Is Sardinia your perfect Italian escape?

Sardinia is Italy, but it doesn’t feel like anywhere else. Ancient stone towers that pre-date Rome dot the landscape, shepherd culture still influences how people eat, drink, and work, and many parts of the island remain largely unchanged by modern tourism.

Researching destinations is part of what we do at Magari, so we’ve put together our knowledge to help you decide if a holiday to Sardinia is right for your next Italian adventure.

Highlights:

  • Unique bronze-Age nuraghi towers and ancient archaeological sites
  • Supramonte Mountains and wild inland landscapes
  • Medieval towns like Bosa and Alghero
  • Traditional shepherd cuisine and local wines
  • Neptune’s Caves and coastal beauty
  • World-class beaches and nature reserves

Ancient Sardinia – history carved in stone

Sardinia’s story doesn’t start with the Romans – it goes back 3,700 years to the nuraghi: Bronze-Age stone towers found nowhere else on Earth.

At Magari, we think these ancient stones have stories to tell. During our visit to UNESCO-listed Su Nuraxi in Barumini, our local guide brings the past to life, sharing legends, stories, and mysteries that have endured for millennia.

Whether you’re exploring a nuraghe with a local guide, wandering the cobbled streets of Orgosolo and Bosa, or stepping inside centuries-old cathedrals in Cagliari, these sites are windows into the people and cultures that shaped Sardinia long before modern Italy existed.

With Magari, every stop is a chance to understand the heart of Sardinia. By exploring the island’s historical sites alongside its natural beauty, you’ll discover how centuries of local life, legends, and traditions have shaped the island we see today. On our tours, history is something you walk through, taste, and live.

The Supramonte experience

Most package holidays in Sardinia stick to the coast, but at Magari, we take you inland – to the rugged Supramonte Mountains. It’s a land of rugged beauty, hidden valleys, and traditions that have endured for generations. Here, shepherds still tend their flocks, villages cling to hillsides, and life moves at its own pace.

We take you off the beaten track in rugged off-road vehicles, winding along mountain trails to discover lesser-seen corners of the island. Pause at a rustic shepherd’s hut for a feast of local delights, crisp carasau flatbreads, antipasti, roast lamb, cheeses, honey, washed down with rich Cannonau red wine. It’s simple, honest, and shared, just as it’s been for centuries.

Our base for three nights is the Su Gologone Experience Hotel, a family-run retreat in the foothills. Hand-picked by Magari, this hotel gives visitors a chance to live like a local, with craft workshops, a spring-fed pool, and meals inspired by the traditions of Sardinia’s “Blue Zone,” an area known for the longevity and wellbeing of its residents.

There’s time to walk to nearby springs, watch the sunset from your terrace, or simply relax. This isn’t a holiday you rush through – it’s a Magari experience where you explore, taste, and connect with Sardinia.

Sardinian food and wine born from the land

Sardinian cuisine doesn’t try to impress – it’s rooted in shepherd culture, local traditions, and a resourceful, seasonal approach to ingredients. It’s simple, delectable food that tells the story of the land and the people who live on it.

On a Magari Sardinia tour, food is a window into local life. You’ll meet winemakers in family-run vineyards, sample wines aged in ceramic amphoras, and enjoy lunches made from fresh, home-grown produce. You’ll watch artisan bakers at work in wood-fired ovens, taste local cheeses, breads, and charcuterie, and discover why Sardinian wines and traditional dishes are attracting attention worldwide.

These are dishes and drinks handed down through generations, and with Magari, these culinary experiences are built into every day of your tour. By tasting, sharing, and learning directly from the people who make Sardinian food and drink, you’ll understand the island in the most authentic, delicious way possible.
